Paddle gently from Lake Karapiro towards the old submerged Horahora Village and on to Pokaiwhenua Stream. Float silently downstream, being guided by the glow worms sparkling like fairy lights on either side.
Starting late afternoon or early evening, paddle along the southern edge of Lake Karapiro and over the old submerged Horahora Village and the Dam that produced electricity for the renowned early Waihi goldfields.
Learn the history of the Horahora village and enjoy the twilight and silence of being on the water as night arrives over the lake.
As the day draws to an end, paddle slowly up the Pokaiwhenua Stream and through the canyon carved out by water over many hundreds of years. Be surrounded by native ferns and trees, with bird life all around you throughout the canyon.
When darkness falls, float silently back downstream, guided by the glow worms on either side sparkling like Christmas lights.
A zero alcohol and smoking policy applies.
Minimum numbers are required for tours to proceed.
Please bring warm layer clothing (preferrably not cotton) as evening temperatures do drop. No jeans. Overpants, splash jackets and wetshoes will be provided.
Cameras are okay for going upstream while it's still light - they are no good after dark as the flash will spoil the viewing of the Glow Worms for yourself and others on the tour.
This experience takes place in Piarere, Waikato - 15 minutes from Cambridge, 45 minutes from Rotorua, 45 mins from Tauranga.
