Step into the world of Friedensreich Hundertwasser: painter, architect, ecologist, visionary. Be inspired by a diverse collection of his art in his last designed building in the world. Stroll over the afforested roof, enjoy 360-degree views from the golden cupola, explore Wairau Maori Art Gallery.
Celebrate Austrian/NZ artist, ecologist, architect and visionary, Friedensreich Hundertwasser at this unique art centre, a gift to the people of Whangarei, nestled in the scenic Town Basin next to the Hatea River. This centre is more than a building, it's a narrative of community, creativity, urban nature and sustainable living. Hundertwasser created buildings in which the creativity of nature meets human creativity. In keeping with his philosophy, the Hundertwasser Art Centre restores territories to nature with spontaneous vegetation, tree tenants and an afforested roof which embodies his vision of architecture in harmony with nature. Alongside his famous public toilets in Kawakawa, the Hundertwasser Art Centre is the only other example of Hundertwasser’s architecture in the southern hemisphere.
Discover how Hundertwasser realized his ideas of living in harmony with the laws of nature - planting more than 100,000 trees, creating canals and ponds, building water purification systems, using solar and water energy as well as the humus toilet in all his places of residence. View examples of his original environmental posters, part of Hundertwasser's strategy which manifested itself in a variety of activities, lectures and actions aimed at preserving nature and activating people's awareness of environmental protection. From the Golden Cupola, enjoy breathtaking 360-degree views of Whangarei, marvel at one of the world's rarest plants as you stroll over the afforested roof and view short films about Hundertwasser’s art, architecture and way of life in the small theatre. Within the Centre, the Wairau Maori Art Gallery offers a rare opportunity to experience world-class contemporary Maori art, making this a must-visit destination for art, architecture and nature enthusiasts alike.
This experience allows full day access to the gallery. Guided tours are for 1 hour on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at an additional cost of $20pp.
The Art Centre is mainly an indoor interactive experience and not affected by weather. Umbrellas are available to use when walking over the afforested roof should it be raining.
This experience takes place at Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand.
